APAE - school for children with special needs

When I was a child I was taken to see a circus. On a later second trip to a circus I saw a group of children and remarked how coincidental it was that the same family were there on both occasions. In fact it was a group of children with Downs Syndrome .... and while they may not have been the same children that I saw the first time, they were, in a special way, the same family.

As one person with Downs Syndrome recently told me, they are all Children of God.

APAE is a small independent school set in the heart of Touros in the northeast of Brazil - possible the town in Brazil that is closest to Europe as the crow flies. Its pupils are all children with special needs - some have Downs, some have other disabilities. The school receives some help from the local Prefecture but relies very heavily on donations and volunteers.

The following nine images are some of the photos that I took at the Christmas party that I recently arranged for a few of the kids. Most came from outlying villages and the effort in getting there was difficult for many of them. End of school term so only about 20% turned up.

Instead of sending Christmas cards to friends and relatives this year I have decided to donate to the school the cash that I would have spent. In 2010 I will help the school as much as I can.

As part of my plan I have placed three images (see 10, 11 and 12 on this page) in my Photobox album and would ask you, my friends and family, to help me to help the children at APAE by buying as many pics as you would like (and feel free to pass on the message to your friends).

Photobox will take its share and postage but my share of the price of the images will go 100% to the school. (That equates to about £10.00 per image) - I normally charge £25.00 for this type of image so if your hearts and wallets are up to it ... buy multiple copies to give as presents.

I had planned on placing a 2010 calendar, with images of Cyprus, for sale but PhotoBox is not able, yet, to arrange this. In the meantime purchases have to be ordered through me and I shall arrange delivery. Details of pricing and postage will be advised as soon as possible - but likely to be in the region of £30.00 excluding postage. The images in the calendar can be removed and framed at the end of the year!
